Every motorcycle GPS we are familiar with comes with black accessories. The mount used to hold the GPS is black. The cradle the GPS sits within is black. Is your motorcycle black? Probably not. We look at some chrome accessories for your motorcycle GPS.
Realistically speaking, there’s not a lot that can be done with the cable. It’s a rubber coated cable and likely won’t be seen if tucked away.
Perhaps you can spray the cradle with some chrome spray paint however many of these cradles are powered. Mistakenly spraying the contacts with paint will render the cradle worthless and might damage your GPS. We recommend living with the black cradle.
Fortunately, there are a lot of chrome options for the mount. We find the majority of motorcycle GPS devices are attached to the handlebar. Some are attached to the controls found on the handlebar but the majority are on the actual handlebar.
The back of almost all motorcycle GPS cradles have what is called an AMPS pattern on the back. The AMPS pattern consists of four screw holes in a rectangular pattern. This is as close to a universal mounting pattern that exists. We’re going to look at chrome accessories that will match up to this AMPS pattern.
Consider the RAM Chrome Combination Brake/Clutch Reservoir U-Bolt Mount with Diamond Base. This mount can be attached to a handlebar or the controls on the handlebar. Included u-bolts attach to handlebars up to 1.25 inches diameter. Also included is the clutch attachment with bolts that will replace the ones currently in place (they are longer to accommodate the added depth of the mounting attachment). A three inch adjustable arm sits atop a ball and socket for adjustment. At the end is a diamond shaped adapter with two holes.
This will attach to the upper right and lower left holes on the back of almost any Garmin Zumo or TomTom Rider powered cradle. The handlebar variety is very easy to install with a wrench to tighten the nuts. The handlebar control attachment can be installed by closely following the included directions. If you do not feel comfortable doing this sort of work yourself, visit your motorcycle mechanic who would be glad to do it for a nominal fee.
For those using their phones with an app like Waze or Navigon Cruiser, the same company offers a very good phone cradle. While the cradle itself doesn’t come in chrome, the remainder of the assembly does come in chrome. Adding the RAM X-Grip IV Smartphone Cradle to the previously mentioned mount will turn the GPS mount into one that will fit a smartphone. The cradle includes a safety tether which we recommend using. The holder opens to 4.5 inches wide which is large enough for practically any smartphone including popular models like the Apple iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy S8.
All of these components come with a manufacturer lifetime warranty. They are made in the USA of mostly metal components and should last as long as your GPS or smartphone if not longer.
I’m Mike, the author of all of the articles on this site. MotorcycleGPSHub is written from many years of experience outfitting motorcycles with GPS devices and mounting configurations. I’ve had a chance to use not just the old school Garmin Zumo, but more contemporary GPS apps like Waze and Google Maps. To each their own. There’s a good market for a traditional motorcycle GPS as well as those that want to keep it basic with a smartphone app.
