Let’s get on with the Garmin Zumo 595LM versus Garmin Zumo 395LM face off.

Hardware

It’s all about display size.  The Garmin Zumo 595LM has a 5″ display.  The Garmin Zumo 395LM has a 4.3″ display.  May not sound like much but the .7″ makes a significant difference.

Battery life is longer with the Garmin Zumo 395LM by about 3 hours.  I suspect that’s a result of the smaller display.  This point may not matter much as most owners will hardwire this GPS to their motorcycle battery.  If the installation will not use a power source, this is an important point and the extra few hours makes a big difference.  You can also think about carrying a spare battery for longer trips.

Both GPS models are made to withstand the extreme vibrations of a motorcycle.  I think that’s a prerequisite for any motorcycle GPS.  So is the waterproof features that both models have.

A good Bluetooth capability can be found on both model GPS devices.  This allows the rider to hear directions through a Bluetooth enabled helmet.  The interface also allows calls to be received through the GPS.

Each of these models supports tire pressure monitoring using the optional Garmin Tire Pressure Monitor Sensor accessory.  This is an additional accessory that can be added which is basically a smart air valve cap that speaks to the GPS.  I like this feature.  Haven’t seen it on other GPS devices.

The hardware category is close but tilted towards the Garmin Zumo 595LM for the larger display.

Software

The LM after each model number means there is a lifetime subscription to map updates.  You don’t need to worry about the maps becoming obsolete.  I recommend upgrading maps yearly.

Both The Garmin Zumo 395LM and Garmin Zumo 595LM feature Garmin Adventurous Riding.  This feature allows the rider to avoid highways and tailor the ride to the extend of curves and hills. Rider alerts will provide notifications of sharp turns and animal crossings.  The software is also going to warn about red light cameras and advise on helmet laws that are unique to each state.  The helmet law feature is interesting but I think should be ignored as all riders should use a helmet but that’s just my opinion.

The Garmin Zumo 595LM brings the rider live weather radar and traffic information from the Smartphone Link app.  The Zumo 595LM also uses LiveTrack, which lets friends track your whereabouts whenever you’re out on a ride.  Reminds of a similar feature in Waze that allows selected friends to see where you are and when you will get there.  The Garmin Zumo 395LM doesn’t have any of these features.

You can use either GPS to play stored MP3 files.  Services such as Pandora and Spotify are supported on the Garmin Zumo 595LM, not the Garmin Zumo 395LM.  The smaller Zumo will allow you to control music and media from a compatible MP3 player or Apple iPhone 4s or higher.

Mounts

Both Garmin Zumo models use a similar mount made by RAM.  Can’t get much better than this.

Summary

No surprise.  The Garmin Zumo 595LM is better than the Garmin Zumo 395LM.  Larger display, more software features, better smartphone integration.

However, there is a significant difference on cost.  The Garmin Zumo 595LM costs more than the Garmin Zumo 395LM.  Perhaps the size and smartphone integration isn’t all that important and if so, the Garmin Zumo 395LM represents a better value.  If you really like the larger size and feel the live traffic and integrated smartphone apps are a must have, the Garmin Zumo 595LM is the better choice.
